Tamamo no mae (玉藻前) is the heroine of a Japanese legend and many of its later versions, as well as several plays of traditional kabuki theater, at least two of which have become very popular and even classics.

Legend
According to legend, in ancient times, kitsune (a werewolf fox) took the form of a woman and, calling herself Tamamo no Mae, became the beloved of Emperor Konoe under this name.

One day at midnight, when the lute was played in the palace, the palace shook, the lamps went out, and radiance began to emanate from Tamamo no Mae (radiance is present in all versions of the legend, but the circumstances that preceded the events and their connection with subsequent events vary greatly). The Emperor fell seriously ill. Fortune-telling was carried out, which showed that the enchantment of Tamamo no mae, which is a kitsune werewolf, was to blame.

The emperor’s beloved, now (for obvious reasons) in disgrace, turned back into a fox and fled from the palace to the Nasu plain. At the command of Konoe, two courtiers chased after her and, for practice in marksmanship, drove dogs in front of them, at which they shot arrows from bows. However, the fox turned into a stone with magical powers – everyone who touched it immediately died. Later, the Japanese erected a burial mound Tamamo no mae over the stone.

The stone split in two on March 5, 2022. Cracks in the stone were seen several years before the split, which may have allowed rainwater to enter and weaken it, so it is highly likely that the stone cracked naturally. Some humorously suggested that Tamamo-no-Mae was released, and social media users in Japan predicted that dark forces were unleashed.
