Thranduil is a fictional character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium. He is an Elven king and the ruler of the Woodland Realm in northern Mirkwood. Thranduil is known for his exceptional skill with the bow and his fierce protection of his people and kingdom.
Thranduil is first introduced in “The Hobbit,” where he plays a minor role as a character who helps Bilbo Baggins and the Company of Dwarves on their journey. In the book, Thranduil is described as a tall, haughty, and proud elf with a great sense of self-importance. He is often at odds with the dwarves, whom he sees as untrustworthy and greedy.
Thranduil’s character is further explored in “The Lord of the Rings” appendixes and in other posthumously published works by Tolkien. In these works, Thranduil is portrayed as a wise and noble ruler who is respected and feared by his enemies. He is also known for his close relationship with his son Legolas, who becomes a key member of the Fellowship of the Ring.
