Sadako Yamamura, often simply referred to as Sadako, is a fictional character from the Japanese horror franchise “Ring,” created by author Koji Suzuki. Sadako first appeared in Suzuki’s novel “Ring” (1991) and gained widespread recognition through the subsequent film adaptations.

Sadako is known as a vengeful ghost or onryō, originating from a tragic backstory. In the story, Sadako was a young girl with supernatural abilities who was thrown into a well and left to die. Her spirit, fueled by anger and a desire for revenge, returns to haunt those who encounter her cursed videotape.

The most iconic aspect of Sadako’s character is her appearance. She is often depicted with long, disheveled black hair obscuring her face, wearing a white dress or robe. This image of Sadako climbing out of a well or crawling out of a television screen has become synonymous with Japanese horror.

Sadako’s curse is typically associated with a cursed videotape that, once viewed, brings about a curse that leads to the viewer’s death within seven days. The curse is lifted only if the viewer makes a copy of the tape and passes it on to someone else, perpetuating the cycle of fear and death.

The “Ring” franchise has expanded with numerous sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, both in film and in other media formats. Sadako has become an iconic figure in Japanese horror and has influenced the genre worldwide.

It’s important to note that while the character of Sadako originated in Koji Suzuki’s novels, she gained significant popularity and recognition through the film adaptations, most notably the 1998 Japanese film “Ring” directed by Hideo Nakata. The success of these films led to the creation of an American remake, “The Ring,” in 2002.

Please keep in mind that my knowledge is based on Sadako’s character up until September 2021, and there may have been further developments or releases related to Sadako since then.
