Sun Ce (孫策) (July 175 – 5 May 200) was a Chinese warlord during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Courtesy name Bófù (伯符). He was a native of Fùchūn County (富春縣) in Wújūn Commandery (吳郡), Yang Province.
Orphaned at a young age, he became a general under Yuan Shu at the age of 19. He assembled an army from the 1,000 or so soldiers of Sun Jian who had been incorporated into Yuan Shu’s army and overthrew Liu Yao to expand his power.
In 200, when Cao Cao and Yuan Shu clashed, Sun Ce rebelled against Yuan Shu and allied himself with Cao Cao. However, on May 5 of the same year, he was assassinated by assassins in Qu’a, Wújūn. He was 25 years old.
In his short life, Sun Ce unified Jiangdong and laid the foundation for Sun Wu. His bravery and popularity were such that he was posthumously praised as the “Little Overlord” (小霸王).
