Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning British monarch, reigning from 6 February 1952 until her death on 8 September 2022. She was also the longest-reigning queen regnant in world history.
Elizabeth was born in London in 1926. She became heir presumptive to the throne in 1936 when her uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. Elizabeth’s father, George VI, ascended to the throne, and Elizabeth became heir apparent.
Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947. They had four children together: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.
Elizabeth became queen in 1952 when her father died. She was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953.
Elizabeth reigned through a period of significant change in the world. She saw the end of the British Empire, the rise of the Cold War, and the fall of the Soviet Union. She also oversaw the transformation of the United Kingdom from a manufacturing economy to a service economy.
Elizabeth was a popular and respected monarch. She was known for her sense of duty, her work ethic, and her commitment to her people. She was also a strong supporter of the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of 56 independent countries that share a common history and culture.
Elizabeth died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on 8 September 2022, at the age of 96. She was succeeded by her son, King Charles III.
Elizabeth was a remarkable woman who lived a truly extraordinary life. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she served her country and the Commonwealth with distinction for over 70 years. She will be deeply missed by people all over the world
