The Krampus is a mythical creature from European folklore, particularly associated with Alpine regions, including Austria, Germany, and parts of Eastern Europe. The Krampus is typically depicted as a horned, anthropomorphic figure resembling a demonic creature. It is known for its role in contrast to St. Nicholas, who rewards well-behaved children with gifts during the Christmas season.
The Krampus, in contrast, is said to punish naughty or misbehaving children. It carries chains, bells, and sometimes a bundle of birch branches to swat or whip disobedient children. In some versions of the legend, the Krampus is also said to carry a sack or basket to carry away particularly naughty children.
Krampus celebrations often occur on Krampusnacht, which is the night of December 5th, the day before the feast of St. Nicholas in some European traditions. During Krampusnacht, people may dress up as Krampus and participate in parades or events.
The Krampus legend has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years and is sometimes celebrated in various parts of the world as part of alternative or subversive Christmas festivities.
