The Flamengo mascot is known as the “Urubu.” The nickname “Urubu” was given to the club and its fans in reference to the club’s emblem, which features red and black colors and resembles the shape of a bird known as an urubu (vulture). The Urubu is an iconic symbol of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo and is widely recognized in the world of football.
The history behind this nickname dates back to the early 20th century when a sports journalist named Gustavo Mendes reported that during a football match, the Flamengo team was playing so poorly that it looked like vultures were flying over the field. This comment, initially made in a derogatory manner, eventually turned into an affectionate nickname adopted by Flamengo’s own fans.
Today, the Urubu is a source of pride for Flamengo supporters, and the team is often referred to as “Mengão” or “Rubro-Negro.” The Urubu mascot can be seen in various forms, from plush mascots to graphic representations on official club merchandise. It is an important part of Flamengo’s identity and culture.
