Major Motoko Kusanagi (草薙 素子 Kusanagi Motoko) is the protagonist of Masamune Shiro’s sci-fi cyberpunk manga Ghost in the Shell. Cyborg, works in the 9th Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Japan

In the film adaptation, character designer and animation supervisor Hiroyuki Okiura made her look different from the manga character: “Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg, so her body is strong and young, but her human mentality is much older than she looks. I tried to portray this maturity in her character instead of the original girl created by Masamune Shiro.”
Kenji Kamiyama had difficulty identifying her and was unable to understand the heroine’s motives during the first season of the series.
