Luigi Mario, also known simply as Luigi, is a fictional character featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. Created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the younger fraternal twin brother and sidekick of Mario.
Luigi first appeared in the 1983 Game & Watch game Mario Bros., where he is the character controlled by the second player. He would retain this role in many future games, including Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, among other titles.
In 1990, Luigi starred in his first solo game, Luigi’s Mansion for the Game Boy. In this game, Luigi must use a vacuum cleaner to capture ghosts in a haunted mansion. Luigi’s Mansion was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Luigi as a more prominent character in the Mario franchise.
Luigi has since starred in several other solo games, including Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for the Nintendo 3DS, Luigi’s Mansion 3 for the Nintendo Switch, and Luigi’s Mansion: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions for the Nintendo Switch.
