Komainu is a type of mythical creature commonly found in Japanese and East Asian folklore. It is a statue of a guardian lion-dog often seen in pairs, with one statue being placed on the right and the other on the left at the entrance of a shrine, temple or other important building.

Komainu is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the entrance of the building it is guarding. It is often depicted with an open mouth, with the right Komainu roaring and the left Komainu with its mouth closed. The Komainu with the open mouth is believed to be saying the first sound of the Sanskrit alphabet “a”, while the Komainu with the closed mouth is believed to be saying the last sound “um”, collectively symbolizing the beginning and end of all things.

Komainu is also often depicted as a lion-dog hybrid with a mane of flames, sharp teeth, and claws. It is believed to be a powerful creature that can breathe fire and is capable of warding off evil spirits and demons.

Komainu has become a popular cultural symbol and is often featured in various forms of Japanese art and media, including anime, manga, and video games. Its likeness has also been used in architecture and design, appearing in everything from furniture to fashion.
