Joan of Arc, also known as Jeanne d’Arc in French, was a historical figure who played a significant role during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France in the 15th century. She was born in 1412 in Domrémy, a small village in northeastern France.

Joan of Arc’s story is one of courage, faith, and military leadership. At a young age, she claimed to have received visions and messages from saints instructing her to support Charles VII, the dauphin (heir to the French throne), and help him reclaim his kingdom from English occupation.

In 1429, at the age of 17, Joan traveled to the dauphin’s court and convinced him of her divine mission. She was given armor, weapons, and command of a small army. Joan inspired the French forces with her presence and led them to several important victories, including the lifting of the siege of Orléans, which became a turning point in the war.

Her military success and her belief in divine guidance led to her being seen as a symbol of hope and inspiration for the French. However, she faced opposition and skepticism, both from some within the French court and from the English.

In 1430, Joan was captured by the Burgundians, allies of the English, during a military campaign. She was handed over to the English and put on trial for charges including heresy, witchcraft, and wearing male military attire. In 1431, she was found guilty and was sentenced to death by burning at the stake.

Joan of Arc was executed on May 30, 1431, in Rouen, France, at the age of 19. Decades later, her trial was reviewed, and in 1456, she was declared innocent of all charges. In 1920, she was canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

Joan of Arc’s story has become an enduring symbol of courage, conviction, and faith. She is celebrated as a national heroine in France and continues to be an inspiration for many people around the world. Her life and legacy have been depicted in numerous books, plays, films, and other forms of media.
