One day, King Polydect ordered Perseus to kill the Gorgon Medusa. Taking advantage of the advice of Hermes and Athena, Perseus, before the battle with the snake-haired one, turned to the three prophetic old gray sisters. They were sisters to the gorgons, and they all had only one tooth and one eye. Using his cunning, the future hero stole two “jewels” from them.
How can three old women live without an eye and a tooth?! Begging him to give back the stolen, the old women promised him everything that “my heart desires.” Having exchanged “jewels” for Hades’ invisibility cap, a magic bag, winged sandals and having learned the way to the Gorgons, Perseus set off on a long journey.
Flying sandals and other exchange items were very useful to the hero, especially the crooked knife given to him by Hermes. It was with this sharp knife that Perseus managed to cut off the head of Medusa. Like everyone else, he could turn into stone if he only looked into the eyes of the monster, but his wit helped. Athena’s polished shield allowed the victor to see through the reflection. Taking the severed head and putting it in a bag, he put on an invisibility hat and safely hid from the rest of the snake-haired immortal sisters.
