In Greek mythology, Danae was a princess of Argos and the mother of Perseus, one of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology. Her father, King Acrisius of Argos, received a prophecy that he would be killed by his grandson. To prevent this from happening, he locked Danae in a tower of bronze, so that no man could approach her.
However, Zeus, the king of the gods, fell in love with Danae and visited her in the form of golden rain. As a result of their union, Danae became pregnant with Perseus. When King Acrisius learned of his daughter’s pregnancy, he cast her and her newborn son into the sea in a wooden chest. They eventually washed up on the island of Seriphos, where they were rescued by a fisherman named Dictys.
Danae and Perseus were taken in by Dictys and his brother, the king of the island, Polydectes. Polydectes later fell in love with Danae, but Perseus, now grown to manhood, killed him to save his mother. With the help of the gods and the gifts they bestowed upon him, Perseus went on to become a great hero, slaying monsters such as Medusa and saving the kingdom of Argos.
