Sinister accursed books claim that the serpent-bearded Byatis came with the Great Old Ones from unknown stars. Being the god of oblivion, he can be summoned through his idol brought to our planet by the Deep One race. Provided that a living being touches his image!
The terrible face of Byatis is able to confuse any curious. He is a true nightmare, bearing resemblances to a spider and a crab. With only one eye, like a cyclops, and the limbs of a crustacean. Tentacles hang from his creepy face, resembling either elephant trunks or snakes. For this, Byatis received the nickname of the serpent-beard. And when he draws in the proboscis with an eye, then, as the legends say, it also resembles a toad.
His gaze plunges the mind into darkness, and by taking away the vitality of the victims, Byatis grows and becomes stronger. According to the legends, Byatis was released from captivity by the Romans in Britain. Possessing hypnotic power, the Ancient One took advantage of the helplessness of his unwitting liberators, and escaped the age-long captivity in which he was long before the Roman invasion of the island.
Byatis is first mentioned in the short story, The Shambler from the Stars, 1935 by Robert Bloch. It is described in detail in Ramsey Campbell’s story “The Room in the Castle” (The Room in the Castle, 1964).
