In Greek mythology, Argus Panoptes (or Argos) was a giant with a hundred eyes all over his body, allowing him to see in all directions. He was often employed by the goddess Hera as a watchman due to his ability to see everything. In one of the most famous myths involving Argus, he was tasked with guarding the nymph Io, whom Zeus had turned into a heifer to hide her from Hera’s wrath. Hermes was eventually able to put Argus to sleep and then slay him, freeing Io from her captivity.
The story of Argus has been referenced in various works of art and literature throughout history, often as a symbol of surveillance or watchfulness. In modern times, the name “Argus” has been used for various products and technologies related to surveillance or monitoring.
