Amaterasu, Amaterasu-o-mikami (Japanese 天照大御神 Amaterasu ōmikami, “the great sacred goddess shining in the sky”, or “ruling in the sky”) is the sun goddess in Japanese mythology, one of the dominant deities of the all-Japanese pantheon Shinto, according to Shinto beliefs, is the progenitor of the Japanese imperial family. It is believed that the first Emperor Jimmu was her great-great-great-grandson. Ruler of the Heavenly Fields Takamagahara (Jap. 高天原). According to legend, in the past, Emperor Shomu had difficulty completing the Todaiji Great Oriental Temple and the grandiose Vairochana Buddha statue in it. When he turned to Amaterasu for help through the miracle worker Gyoki, who lived in the 7th-8th centuries, the goddess replied that she was the Buddha Vairochana. However, most likely this legend appeared much later than the events described in it, since its first mention dates back to the second half of the 13th century.

Amaterasu is revered as the inventor of rice cultivation, silk technology and the loom.
