The goddess of the month August is Persephone, the Greek goddess of the harvest, queen of the Underworld, and the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. She is often depicted as a young woman wearing a crown of wheat or poppies.
Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, the god of the Underworld, and taken to his realm. Demeter, her mother, was so grief-stricken that she refused to let the crops grow. Zeus eventually intervened and forced Hades to release Persephone, but she had to spend part of the year in the Underworld. This is why the seasons change, with spring and summer representing Persephone’s time on Earth and fall and winter representing her time in the Underworld.
Persephone is a complex and mysterious figure, and her story has been interpreted in many different ways. She is often seen as a symbol of death and rebirth, but she can also be seen as a symbol of hope and renewal.
In Roman mythology, Persephone is known as Proserpina.
