The term “numinous” is often used to describe experiences that evoke a sense of awe, wonder, and spiritual significance. The word was coined by the German theologian and philosopher Rudolf Otto in his 1917 book “The Idea of the Holy.”
According to Otto, the numinous is a non-rational experience that is beyond the ordinary and can be associated with religious or mystical experiences. He described it as a feeling of “creature-consciousness” in which one is acutely aware of their own smallness and insignificance in the face of something greater and more powerful.
The numinous experience can take many forms, such as encountering a beautiful piece of art, experiencing the grandeur of nature, or feeling a deep sense of awe and reverence during a religious ceremony. It is often accompanied by a sense of transcendence, in which one feels a connection to something larger than oneself.
The concept of the numinous has been influential in the fields of psychology, philosophy, and theology, and continues to be a subject of study and debate today.
