Tauriel is a fictional character from Peter Jackson’s feature film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. The character does not appear in the original novel, but was created by Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh as an expansion of material adapted from the novel.
Tauriel is a Silvan Elf, and is a member of the guard of Thranduil, the Elvenking of Mirkwood. She is a skilled archer and warrior, and is also a healer. She is fiercely loyal to Thranduil and to her fellow Silvan Elves.
Tauriel first appears in the second film of the Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug. She is part of the Elven force that captures Thorin Oakenshield and his company of dwarves. Tauriel is initially hostile to the dwarves, but she comes to respect them, and eventually develops a romantic relationship with Kili, one of the dwarves.
Tauriel’s relationship with Kili is forbidden, as Thranduil has forbidden his people from fraternizing with dwarves. However, Tauriel and Kili defy Thranduil’s orders, and continue their relationship in secret.
In the third film of the Hobbit trilogy, The Battle of the Five Armies, Tauriel and Kili fight alongside the dwarves and the Men of Lake-town in the Battle of Five Armies. Kili is killed in the battle, and Tauriel is devastated. She leaves Mirkwood and travels to Dale, where she helps to rebuild the city.
Tauriel is a complex and interesting character. She is strong, independent, and fiercely loyal to those she loves. She is also capable of great compassion and love. She is a tragic figure, but her story is one of hope and redemption.
